Hey there, desk dwellers! We know the office chair is comfy—but sitting all day? Not so great for your body (or your brain). The good news? You don’t need to run marathons or squeeze into Lycra to get healthier. Just walking a bit more each day can make a real difference.
Why Bother Walking?
Okay, here’s the deal: Sitting for hours on end can make your joints stiff, mess with your heart health, and even dampen your mood. But get this—taking regular walks helps keep things moving (literally and mentally). You’ll feel more awake, less stressed, and bonus: you might even sleep better!
Sneaky Ways to Squeeze in More Steps
We’re not asking for a 5K before breakfast. Just a few tweaks to your day can work wonders:
Walk part of the way to work – Get off the bus a stop early or park a bit further.
Take mini-breaks – Set a timer to stand up and stretch those legs. Even a quick lap around the office counts!
Lunch strolls are gold – Ten minutes in the fresh air does wonders. It’s like a reset button.
Talk & walk – Got a call? Pop in your headphones and do a few laps while you chat.
Stairs over lifts – Yes, it’s effort. But it’s also a sneaky leg workout.
The NHS has this great app called Active 10. It tracks your walking and gives you a virtual high five when you hit your goals. Aim for 10 brisk minutes a day – you’ll be surprised how easy it is to smash it.
It’s not about being perfect, it’s about doing something. Invite a colleague to join you for a walk (bonus: office gossip, or even a meeting AND exercise). Before you know it, your legs will thank you – and so will your brain.
So, ready to take a step in the right direction? Let’s walk and roll!
Skewb already does a great job – adding walking into the weekly routine – that Wednesday lunchtime walk is a fantastic start. But to really feel the benefits, we need to build in a bit more. You’ve probably heard the ‘10,000 steps a day’ rule, but interestingly, that number wasn’t born from science – it actually started as a catchy marketing idea in Japan decades ago.
The real guidance from health experts is around 150 minutes of moderate activity per week, which works out to roughly 7,000 steps a day for most adults.
Personally, I’ve found that making small adjustments ensures that it becomes part of my everyday life. For example, I now park at a garden centre and walk my son to school from there. It adds just five minutes to our morning but gives us over 1,000 extra steps – and some nice time together too.
Here are a few easy ways you can sneak more walking into your day.
✅ 1. Start With Short Walks
- Begin with 10 – 15 minutes per day, especially if you’re currently inactive.
- Build up to at least 30 minutes daily, which meets general health guidelines.
🏡 2. Build Walking into Existing Habits
- Morning routine: Take a short walk after coffee or breakfast.
- Lunch break: Walk around the block or a nearby park.
- After dinner: Use a walk to help digestion and wind down.
🚌 3. Make Small Lifestyle Adjustments
- Park farther away from stores or the office.
- Take stairs instead of elevators.
- Get off public transport one stop early and walk the rest.
📅 4. Schedule It Like a Meeting
- Put it on your calendar so it becomes a non-negotiable part of your day.
- Set reminders to get up and walk, especially if you sit for long periods.
🎧 5. Pair It with Other Activities
- Listen to podcasts or audiobooks.
- Make walking your time for phone calls or thinking through problems.
👫 6. Make It Social
- Walk with a friend or family member.
- Join a walking group or community challenge.
🐾 7. Use Motivation Tools
- Use a fitness tracker to count steps.
- Set small daily goals and increase gradually.
- Reward yourself for consistency.
