The “4 D’s” framework for success often refers to Desire, Determination, Dedication and Discipline.
These pillars emphasize the importance of having a clear purpose and unwavering commitment, consistently working towards your goals, maintaining focus and self-control, and having the inner motivation to persevere through challenges. This framework can be applied to various aspects of life, including personal growth, career development, and achieving specific goals.
Everyone wants to be very successful in life. Success is measured with different parameters, and it varies from individual to individual. Generally, it’s about achieving goals, experiencing fulfilment, and living a meaningful life that aligns with one’s values. Some see wealth as success, to others it is position and power, awards and fame, professional and personal growth, personal relationship, new inventions and making a difference in the world and so on. Success is often defined as the ability to reach our goals in life, whatever those goals may be.
It is easy to set our goals but the path to success is more difficult than we presume. If we go through the stories of any successful individuals, it is evident that they certainly possess unique qualities which made them the most successful persons in their chosen fields. If we look back and remember few of the great success stories in the last few decades, whether it’s a businessman or businesswoman, technology giants, sports persons, social activists, academic excellence, novelists etc, some of these people quit college, struggled to start again after failure, or began a new after being beaten back multiple times.
I would like to note that each of these greatest personalities have built their success stories on this 4 D framework, which has majorly contributed to achieving their goals, ultimately to be successful in their lives. These qualities have made these ordinary persons into extraordinary performers in their chosen fields. Their success stories help us in understanding inspiring experiences of successful people, how they turn challenges into future success. These life changing stories are replete with moments that would turn any man to a quitter.
What do they mean? Let us take each separately and look.
Desire
Desire is a strong feeling of wanting to have something or wishing for something to happen. Three fundamental human desires include the need for survival, belonging, and becoming. These desires are deeply rooted in our biology and evolution and are essential for our well-being. “Survival” is the most basic human need, encompassing the physical necessities for life, such as food, water, shelter, and safety. “Belonging” refers to our need for community and connection with others. “Becoming” refers to our drive to grow, learn, and reach our full potential, striving for self-actualization and achieving a sense of purpose.
Any desire (or goal) must have the right amount of challenge or stretch. Too much or too little – there won’t be enough motivation to sustain the effort, nor provide a sense of achievement. Recognise that you’ll move out of your comfort zone, away from that place of familiarity and predictability and into your ‘stretch zone’ of learning and growth. Your mindset can adapt and take on a growth mindset approach, open to possibility. Your stretch zone may feel new and awkward at first – this is normal. You may feel frustrated as you begin to learn something new, and yet, you will learn. You’ll recognise over time that you have done this before and you are moving closer to achieving your goal.
Determination
Determination is a positive emotional feeling that promotes persevering towards our goal despite many obstacles through our journey. This is the backbone to the success journey. It is important to have the same level of determination until we reach our goal, irrespective of how difficult it is to achieve. Many people will give up through the journey if they think the task is unachievable or more difficult to achieve, which is nothing but accepting the failure. This attitude never gives us any opportunity to learn anything new because we accept failure without even trying it. I strongly believe that, even it is an unachievable goal, having the right attitude (“I can do it”) will almost give us 50% success at the start of the journey and the remaining 50% depends on having the same determination throughout the journey. In case we tried our best but failed at the end of our journey, this experience doesn’t go waste but gives us so much confidence dealing such complex goals again in future. What defines greatness in these leaders is their determination to achieve their goals despite the odds stacked against them.
Dedication
It is the quality of being dedicated or committed to a task or purpose. It is a single-minded focus on our goal, let nothing interfere or divert our attention or focus. Dedication and commitment are what transfer our dreams into a reality. During our journey, nothing is straight forward and smooth, there will be several bends, hardships, roadblocks etc. We should be ready to go extra mile every time to ensure we are able to manage the set expectations in the right way at the right time. Anything and everything are possible with hard work and dedication.
An episode on archery skills test from Mahabharata (an ancient Indian epic in 800BC) demonstrates how focused a great warrior needs to be. Dronacharya asked his students to get ready to strike the eye of a wooden bird. When asked about their focus, all his students were saying they could see their target (bird, tree) but only Arjuna says only the eye of the bird. Arjuna focuses solely on the target, ultimately hitting it perfectly. This highlights the importance of focus and dedication in achieving one’s goals.
Discipline
Discipline is the quality of being able to behave and work in a controlled way which involves obeying particular rules or standards. Discipline is very crucial for achieving our goals. It involves setting clear objectives, developing a plan, and consistently working towards them, even when faced with distractions or setbacks. Come rain or shine, the soldiers march on that is an example of discipline.
Let’s remember some of the greatest personalities, their stories of hope and triumph are a lifelong narrative that has inspired many into new determinative success paths.
Thomas Alva Edison was the most exceptional scientist of the late nineteenth-century and the bulb’s inventor. He developed many devices in fields such as electric power generation, mass communication, sound recording, and motion pictures. These inventions, which include the phonograph, the motion picture camera, and early versions of the electric light bulb, have had a widespread impact on the modern industrialized world. He was one of the first inventors to apply the principles of organized science and teamwork to the process of invention, working with many researchers and employees. Edison developed hearing problems at the age of 12. He was completely deaf in one ear and barely hearing in the other. As he got older, Edison believed his hearing loss allowed him to avoid distraction and concentrate more easily on his work. During the course of his inventions, he suffered several defeats, the reality of which have thousand failures. Some of his dedication to experimentation and discovery set him apart from others, and therefore, he became light’s bearer and an invincible force in the invention realm.
Steven Paul Jobs was one among the famous personalities who brought into light the much famous brand called “Apple” which doesn’t require any introduction. He was a college dropout and founded Apple in 1976. Despite all the difficulties and failures, Steve remained the major driving force to turn this company into one of the most significant and valuable tech companies worldwide. He made an immeasurable difference in the industry and the way we use technology in our daily lives and greatly influenced the progress of the industry and will be remembered for that for centuries.
Bill Gates is the co-founder of Microsoft Company which has played a crucial role in changing the face of personal computing, by bringing out cheap and easy to use software to the market. He left Harvard University and formed Microsoft in 1975 that made a revolution in the technological sector. They all remember the vision of having a PC on each desk, though it may be slightly misquoted but today such vision was a revolution that has significantly transformed the world of work, learning and communication. But Gates’ course did not go without some obstacles, his life experience is a true example of the mission, good idea, and improvement of the world with inspiration to other students and many people to follow their dreams and become successful to make a change. When Gates decided to retire from Microsoft, he thought of changing his status to a philanthropist. With his then-wife Melinda, he formed the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation that was voted the world’s biggest private charitable foundation.
Joanne K Rowling is a British author and philanthropist. She is the one who originated Harry Potter. Born in Yate, Gloucestershire, Rowling was working as a researcher and bilingual secretary for Amnesty International in 1990 when she conceived the idea for the Harry Potter series. The seven-year period that followed was a real setback phase in her life until the first novel in the series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, was published in 1997. Six sequels followed, concluding with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (2007). By 2008, Forbes had named her the world’s highest-paid author. But it was not very easy for her to come to this stage. During initial days, when she finished Harry Potter, twelve publications turned it down. Despite facing rejection, the same J.K. Rowling didn’t give up and eventually the tale of Harry Potter is the success that came out of this. She was able to work hard with a great writing skill and thus she overcame the obstacles. The fantastic & magical ride of the wizarding world started, enchanting millions of people worldwide and making Rowing a literary giant.

Life is all about setting a goal and winning it. Then set another goal, again win it. It is a never-ending cycle that keeps us lively throughout our life. So let us keep setting our goals and continue having the pride in winning them. While the idea of setting goals and “winning” in life can be motivating, it’s a simplified view. Life is a multifaceted journey with a mix of triumphs, setbacks, and personal growth, not just a competition to be “won”. Instead of solely focusing on winning, it’s more valuable to explore the process of goal setting, the importance of self-reflection, and the value of personal growth.
“Keep your dreams alive. Understand, to achieve anything requires faith and belief in yourself, vision, hard work, determination and dedication. Remember all things are possible for those who believe. And most importantly BE POSITIVE and never GIVE UP.”
