Something smells Phishy

The easiest way for a criminal to extort your information is via Email and text messages.

This can range from asking you to purchase something, telling them your security code, telephone number and password. 15 Since 2022, Skewbers have experienced over 4 Phishing and Spearing attempts.

Example 1

You receive an email or text message from a senior Skewber explaining that they can’t speak to you right now, but can you buy some Google Play gift vouchers and send them the codes so they may pass these on to a client? Always check who you’re speaking to using Teams. Do Not, message them back using

Example 2

You received an email stating that your employee benefits have changed. Please log on with your Skewb email address and password to review them the same means they contacted you on.

Always check the email address and wording. Is the email address for the company we use correct? Have the People Team informed you, instead of this unknown email? Is the grammar in the email odd?

Example 3

You receive a telephone call from someone pretending to be your car insurance provider. They explain that someone has claimed you scratched their car. They ask if they can email you an accident form, which you must complete immediately with all your details, including your bank account information. The form looks official.

Don’t give them your email address; your insurance provider already knows this. If they keep pressing the point, tell them you are busy, hang up the phone, and call the insurance provider listed on your insurance certificate.

If any of the above occurs, please reach out to Skewb’s Information Security team for advice. If it happens to a friend or family member. Please report the attempted fraud to the UK online service ‘Action Fraud’ who will help stop this from happening to others.
