Client Relationships in Bloom

Whether it’s with colleagues, clients, or even the person who makes your morning coffee, good relationships can be the difference between a normal day and a great one. In any professional setting, but especially in the ever changing and people driven world of utilities, strong relationships aren’t just nice to have – they’re a core part of getting things done. That’s why learning how to build and maintain those connections is such a valuable skill, not just for individuals but for whole organisations.

So how do we build those vital relationships, and keep them flourishing?

No email or Teams call can quite match the impact of face-to-face meetings. Sitting across the table from a client allows for natural conversation, greater trust building, and a deeper understanding of their challenges and concerns. A site visit, a shared coffee, or attending an industry event together – these interactions humanise the relationship. They can also create a safer space for clients to share more openly, which leads to a more valuable collaboration.

Initial trust might come from a strong proposal or good reputation, but long-term trust is earned over time. It’s built by following through on commitments and being honest about what’s possible.

At Skewb, relationship building isn’t just something we talk about, it’s something we prioritise. Skewb embed client care into every part of our work. We encourage site visits, support ongoing learning about client industries, and ensure our teams are empowered to connect regularly and meaningfully.

Why Face-to-Face Engagement Still Matters – and How We Can Use It Better

As we become increasingly reliant on digital channels, it’s easy to assume customers are happy to manage everything online. But research consistently shows the opposite – people still value personal interaction, especially when it comes to essential services like utilities.

In fact, 64% of consumers want meaningful connections with the organisations they deal with, and younger customers in particular prioritise live, in-person experiences. In a sector where trust, reliability and public perception are critical, face-to-face engagement remains one of our strongest tools for building lasting relationships.

Here’s why it matters – and how we can all use it more effectively in our day-to-day roles.

1. Putting a Human Face to Our Organisation

Utilities are often seen as big, faceless organisations. Meeting customers, business clients and community representatives in person helps challenge that perception.

When we attend local forums, visit business customers or simply spend more time out in the field, we make the organisation feel more approachable and accountable. People are far more likely to trust and cooperate with us when they can see the people behind the service.

What you can do:

  • Be visible at community events or customer meetings whenever possible
  • Introduce yourself personally when dealing with customers face-to-face
  • Share real stories about the work we do and the people who deliver it
2. Making Complex Services Easier to Understand

Tariffs, smart meter rollouts, infrastructure upgrades and energy efficiency schemes can be difficult to explain in writing. In-person conversations allow us to clarify details, answer questions immediately and show customers how our solutions directly benefit them.

What you can do:

  • Take time to explain how and why projects are happening – not just what they are
  • Use demonstrations or visual aids when possible (people remember what they see)
  • Encourage questions – and use them as a chance to build understanding and trust
3. Building Loyalty Through Memorable Experiences

Long-term customer relationships are far more valuable than one-off interactions. A single positive face-to-face experience – whether that’s helping a business customer optimise their energy use or taking time to explain an issue to a household – can change how someone feels about us for years to come.

What you can do:

  • Treat every face-to-face meeting as a chance to build long-term trust, not just solve the immediate issue
  • Follow up after in-person conversations to show you’ve listened and acted on feedback
4. Gaining Insights You Can’t Get Online

Surveys and analytics are useful, but they don’t always reveal how customers really feel. In-person conversations give us the chance to pick up on tone, body language and off-the-cuff comments that highlight issues or opportunities we might otherwise miss.

What you can do:

  • Ask open questions and listen carefully to what people are really saying
  • Share any useful insights with your team so we can respond quickly to concerns
5. Strengthening Our Community Relationships

We play a huge role in people’s daily lives, so visibility in the community is crucial. By being present – whether at local consultation events, public meetings or school sustainability workshops – we show that we care about the areas we serve.

What you can do:

  • Look for opportunities to represent us at local events or forums
  • Be approachable and ready to answer questions, even if they’re outside your immediate role
6. Standing Out for the Right Reasons

Customers expect reliable service, but what really makes a difference is how we treat them. Companies that take the time to engage personally are remembered for the right reasons – for being approachable, knowledgeable and helpful.

What you can do:

  • Be proactive in offering to meet customers or stakeholders in person when it adds value
  • Make sure every face-to-face interaction reflects professionalism and care
The Takeaway

Digital tools are essential, but they can’t replace the trust, understanding and goodwill that come from personal interaction. Every face-to-face meeting – whether with a customer, a business client or a community group – is an opportunity to strengthen relationships and improve how people see us.

If you have ideas for how we can do this better in your area, please share them. The more we put ourselves out there, the stronger our relationships will be.
